Up early to help with the kids, they love to play Sarah up with getting dressed,i had a really bad ear ache, haven't had one in 30 years, couple of pills helped,Sarah took the kids in on her own as i didn't want the cold air to make it worse, heavy frost this morning ,just what i have been wanting.
Did the shopping at lidle today, its a tight week this week with only £100 in the kitty for the food and everything else shop wise.Went to mole valley for a saw blade ,they've gone up in price, last time i bought one from there a year ago they were £3.00 today they were £5.99! still i found that a sack of Swede is cheap there as they're classed as animal feed being as they are the small and miss shaped ones,£3.00 a sack compared to £7.50 for human grade.
Once home i cooked a little light lunch and did the prep for tea tonight, ready for toad in the hole and veg, then cut some wood for this evening, the new saw blade is really nice.

Monday 30th January 2012.
Early start and the kids were excited to see we had an inch of snow,it didn't settle on most of the ground due to the rain earlier.Ben is still unwell but was eager to go to school as he has a trip to Shaftesbury school to use the climbing wall and other big boys equipment.Sarah checked the website and it said the school was shut but a phone call was made and it turned out the school was open,in fact it turned out there was no snow anywhere in mere.
Had small flurries till 12 noon, but by then it was too warm to settle.Picked the boys up with Sarah,i look forward to the social side of picking them up,a chance for a chat, don't get that much here as we are so isolated, you can go a month here without speaking to a soul!
Once the kids were home we cooked tea, bubble and squeak with cold meats, its a tasty way of making use of yesterdays scraps, the trick with bubble and squeak is to burn the bottom and add a couple of chicken oxo's into the mix.
quiet evening once the boys were off to bed,not before a game of chess with jack and Robin.

Sunday 29th January 2012.
Bad nights sleep led to no church today,Shaun left early to sell his trike ,Sarah took charlie to Elijah's birthday party at the mere lecture hall 12-2pm so the boys and i took to doing some tidying up,cleaned the front room and concentrated on cleaning the windows and the surrounds, looks much better, the net curtains are down for a wash and to be honest i like it without them ,we get more light and you can see the fields and the hedgerows which is very nice, need to cut the hedge though!
Got the roast well underway before Sarah returned ,jack and Ben helped with the prep, roast pork today which is always well received here, especially if i manage to get crackling. In the afternoon we watched a film on the PC ,'the long walk' the kids loved it ,story of a bunch of soviet convicts that escaped Siberia and made it to India on foot!
Dinner was ready by 6pm and was eagerly devoured, everyone was hungry as we missed lunch, still its an extra meal in the cupboard.Baths were had by all and the fire burned bright ,the met office predicts snow from 10pm .
2am and the promised snow is light rain,am disappointed maybe there will be more during the night.

The weather is great! sun is out and its nice and cold, the meteor didn't hit us and theres no snow! Ben is unwell with a sore throat and is in the chair with a duvet, the others were sent out with the dogs, five minutes later jack is back all upset, apparently the dogs chased 2 deer right across the fields ind into the back fields! so we sent him back out with a phone and told him to find the dogs ,he found Robin and he had the two dogs, apparently scooby took the doe down but it got back up and made off, well what a great start to the day!
next on the to do list is chain the trailer up and then chop kindling as there is a rumour of snow for Monday.
Got a fair bit done this afternoon, hung doors, put up mirror, and postit board,Fat Pete came over today had a cuppa T and a chat, not many old Ravens about now.
Chili con carne for tea tonight, one of my faves as i can load up the chili for me once dished up,Shaun came over, got a new car, don't suppose he will keep it long!
Finally got the kids off to bed, watched a film ,soon off to bed.Hope to make church tomorrow, apparently its called 'matins' which i am told is a very old fashioned service, will be interesting to see what its like.

Overslept this morn, woke up by Sarah she had been verbally attacked by the taxi driver that picks up the Stein's kid, credit to Sarah she got straight on to the council and complained to the school transport folk at Trowbridge, hopefully they will take this seriously, the Steins love to use others to do their dirty work still they will get a return on they're wicked ways ,the big man assures us of that,oh and the asbo officer!
Just lit the fire as its cold in the house again, just cant afford to use the oil fuelled heating,it does make the front room cosy, problem then is convincing myself to go out in the cold to chop wood!
Apparently according to the bbcr2 news an asteroid the size of a bus is on a near earth trajectory and will pass between us and the moon some time today , so if this is my last post it hit us! lol the big question is i suppose as i sit here next to the fire,do i bother washing up and chopping wood in the cold if the world may end today?
from BBC :
At its closest, the space rock - named 2012 BX34 - will pass within about 60,000km of Earth - less than a fifth of the distance to the Moon.
Astronomers stress that there is no cause for concern.
"It's one of the closest approaches recorded," said Gareth Williams, associate director of the US-based Minor Planet Center.
"It makes it in to the top 20 closest approaches, but it's sufficiently far away... that there's absolutely no chance of it hitting us," he told the BBC.
The asteroid's path makes it the closest space-rock to pass by the Earth since object 2011 MD in June 2011.
Earlier estimates put the asteroid's closest distance at as little as 20,000km, near the distance at which geostationary satellites reside, but observations by observatories overnight showed it will pass at a more comfortable distance.
Although the asteroid will not be visible to the naked eye, Dr Williams said that keen backyard astronomers could get a look.
"We've had three sets of observations in the last few hours from amateur observers in the UK," he said."

A sunny day woohoo! time for some vitamin D rush! dont suppose itll last though. bit colder but i don't mind at all at least its dry.
Slow morning followed by Kedgeree for lunch, sounds posh but just scraps from dinner last night, then off the mole valley shop for coal and wood.Tis the cheapest place anywhere for coal at £6.50 for half hundred weight, they have these wooden skips for all the scrap wood in the yard and this is free to have if you ask nicely ,i was surprised to see there was loads,we filled the trailer to the top with wood ,most OK for kindling.Once home i set about cutting it with the saw, this proved problematic so i used my Gransfors axe, piece of cake! stopped to pick up charlie from Lou's house and the boys from after school footie club, they were a bit muddy.
Once home and changed the boys bagged up the kindling,2 buckets and 6 bags of it,i was very happy to have that amount done ,more to do in the morrow.
Ben had the rabbits indoors for a bit peter and hotpot are nice bunnies, hope they will breed this year ,i am planning on rearing rabbit for the pot this year, ideally some fenland giants, lots of meat on them ,must remember to get a rabbit for Walter.

wednesday 25th January 2012.
Weathers still crap! been less than 10 frosts all winter, good for the heating bills but the place is just so wet,I've got so much to do on the allotments and the veg patch here but i cant do it in mud,the rotavator is still ticking over OK,started it up last week ,got me itching to get some crops in,just hope the summer is warmer and dryer than the last one.
The kids are all doing OK today,Ben got a certificate for 100% attendance at school this term,he is well chuffed as a certificate means an extra pond in the pocket for the fortunate .
The saami needle holder is near finished, all polished and looking good, will post a pic in the morrow,i am tying with scrimshawing it with a cross, will be looking for a design tomorrow.

Tuesday 24th January 2012.
Busy day so not much to write, dropped the kids off at mere school and went shopping straight away, popped into Morrison's first had a cuppa with Sarah and a slice of toast,we decided to now only buy what cant be bought at lidle's at Morrison's,the main reason for shopping at Morrison's is the fact that they don't sell Halal meat at all and i just cant eat halal and in my view no Christians should, however that it would appear is down to personal conscience. The butchers counter is always good there and the counter assistant is a cheery chap with a good sense of humour, wanted a hand of pork but theres sod all profit in it now so they only sell it attached to the shoulder and bone and roll it ,so we bought one for a tenner and some chuck steak to mince ,the last lot of cheap mince we bought there was awful when cooked we nearly got 1/2 pint of fat from 1lb of meat! the weeks bill from Morrison's was about £60.00 and that was a small trolley too.Next we went to lidle's the main saving was a special offer on beans 4 tins for 99p ,branston too,so we bought 40 tins! we spent £60.00 in there but some of the stuff will last a month.
When we got home Ben and i minced the venison trim and the chuck steak together, makes a nice mix too, some of this was made into a meat and onion pie with veggies, then we settled down to watch the new Robin Hood film, kids loved it but it was factually inaccurate and in my opinion a lie, ruined it for me really.
That was then the end of the day really and an early night for all.

Monday 23rd January 2012
Been a dull day here today, not a lot of get up and go,Sarah is still not right with the dehydration problem, slow start to the morning then after lunch i went up the shed to do some work, decided on a saami style needle pouch, its made with items in my inventory, deer bone and burl oak,its coming on real well ,hope to post a pic real soon. Took the dogs with us to pick up the boys from school,it as raining but soon passed, spoke to Tamsins husband, turns out he has a degree in pottery,i intend to learn more from him.
Once home i made a chicken and veg soup out of yesterdays scraps, the boys loved it and asked for seconds, only sliced bread today, soup just needs crusty bread!
Tomorrow is Giro day ,cant wait to get some fresh food in,got a craving for salad ,problem is its not in season and the shops charge more than its worth, will do most of the shop at lidles i recon, the tins are certainly cheaper, if i remember i will take my camera to picture some of the 'not so special offers' i spot.Got to get the hinges for the new doors too, shame we aren't near Salisbury in the morrow ironmongery is cheap at in-excess on the netherhampton road.
Just been watching NCIS on the pc,good series ,one of the few things we bother with as we have no actual tv,personally i prefer the wireless.
charlie took the school teddy back today with his diary,i did the pictures and Sarah did the diary write up.
Hope to get a better nights sleep now the winds dropped,at least giro day holds some attraction to getting up!

Sunday 22nd January 2012
its the day of rest so I've got lots on to do,just fixed the kitchen table as it was wobbly at the joints added glue and thicker gauge screws, seems sturdy now, added some casters to the legs to facilitate it moving at mealtimes.
Sadly missed church today, petrol's short and got no money,so we are going to messy church this afternoon instead and hopefully there will be enough petrol for the school run in the morrow.
roast chicken is in the oven rubbed with smoked paprika ,sage and chicken oxo, smells mighty fine! the spuds and parsnips are in now too,the boys love a roast. not sure about pudding as we will get a snack at messy church at 4pm,maybe a doggy bag is needed!
have an urge to do some crafts today,i want to start the chess set pieces ,its gonna be a hard job ,unsure what woods to use Ive got some hornbeam in the shed as well as lots of other stuff, maybe i should get some Lyme wood to carve ,not sure of the cost though. The decoy duck is on the back burner i must get on with it this week,Tuesday is Giro day, don't know why we still call it that as no one gets a giro anymore it goes in the bank, and it seems wrong to call it pay as i haven't worked, still at least I've contributed to the system,on the news they reckoned that migration from outside the EU has cost 130,000 British jobs! so some git has the job i need, when will the government see that it isn't racism to kick these illegals out ,imagine these Lilly livered governments fighting WW2?! 'oh you cant intern these Germans they've got human rights you know!' 'oh don't drop bombs on the Germans its nasty' , we would all be talking German now! mind you having said that Germany is the leading power in the EU so they won in the end eh! i heard on the wireless that Germany and France are printing deutch marks and french francs 'secretly' in case the euro collapses, and i hope it does.
The wind has finally dropped and there is a bit of sun,the week ahead looks dire though,i yearn for crisp frosty morns, nothing like it for a walk with the dogs.Been seeing masses of deer around here lately saw 2 yesterday run in front of the car,roe deer they were up by west knoyle, very dark in colour compared to most here,I've got a replacement deer arriving today so the freezer will be looking better. Its about time Skippy earned his keep on the venison and hare front,if we get a dry night ill take him out with the lamp.

Saturday 21st January 2012
been busy today, made a latch for the front gate,it slammed all night in the high winds, maybe we will get a decent nights sleep tonight! the sun keeps breaking through the clods, but its still cold.
Went over to |Tim's at west knoyle today ,picked up some interior doors to replace broken/missing ones in the house, not enough hinges though! got the rear kitchen one up hopefully it will keep it a bit warmer in the house ,the back of the house is north facing and stay's very cold.
Jack has made a beef casserole today ,at 9 years of age i think he is doing well with his cooking, look forwards to trying it later.shame it wasn't venison! grrrrrrrrr!
Well the stew was great! jacks the man when it comes to stews,i look forward to his next try.
the wind has died down now which is good, the wind gets me down.Sarah has just finished a tank top jumper for the school bear ,problem is its too small, hey ho,at least it will fit another of the many teddys here.
Just listening to the radio ,bbc r2 or as it used to be ,the light program! paul gambochini is on doing his American charts show.I have prepped most of the roast lunch for tomoz, roasted chickens with all the trimmings, which brings me onto a bit of a sore subject, supermarkets are hitting us real hard during this resession ,at morrisons this week one thing really pissed me off, they had two small chickens in a pack marked up at £8.00 for the two, made it look like a great offer ,till you look further along the counter and see that a single chicken is only £3.50! (bearing in mind they were £2.50 a year ago.) and Tesco are at it too,1kg tin of quality street chocolates, advertised as being half price at £5.00 a tin, well before Christmas they were £4.99 a tin, when i pointed this out to the customer services assistant i was told that £5.00 is half price as they were £9.99 a tin in June 2011! really deceptive, still Tesco took a big hit over the Christmas period with sales massively down knocking £s off their share prices.(rant over).
Kids are in bed now ,we played rummy card game this evening ,Ben's a real card shark and pretty good at chess too.Charlie fell asleep on Sarah's lap ans she carried him up,guess he had a busy day with his painting, making a mess with brown sauce and terrorising the neighbourhood.
Church tomorrow, missed it last week ,i certainly feel like it does a lot of good ,re-charges my batteries ready for another hard week. The job centre was fun this week, theres just no jobs out there, even the job centre staff,Justine, could only find 4 jobs within 20 miles of this address most of them closer to the 20 mile than is useful, wish i had got my bike licence back when i had the money,if i had a bike i could at least get out on my own,or get a part time job,i am thinking of doing proper carving if i can find the training,i would love a job carving at Salisbury cathedral or for the NT,i look at the ruud screens and the like in the churches and marvel at the workmanship ,would be great for something of mine to be around in 500 years, leave a stamp on history so to speak.
i think ill have an early night and listen to the radio in bed, hope something goods on.

friday 20th January 2012
At last the weekend is here, hopefully the weather will be better than of late, its been wet now for the last 6-8 weeks with only one or two dry days with temps below zero. The wind is up again ,hopefully there will be some trees down for free fire wood.
Tonight i have a deer to butcher courtesy of a mate who comes by a deer now and again,i hope to trade a leg in return for the radiator we need for the car,my mother once said that if you've got a car you've got your hand in your pocket all the time, how true! but we need it for the school run for Jack Ben and Charlie, luckily Robin has the bus to Gillingham school.
Tonight its curry for tea,i made too much yesterday with tonight in mind,Friday night is Barn buddies night ,a chance to socialise for us and the kids,Tim said he was going to try and get a second hand radiator from the scrap yard ,hope he was successful. It will be good to see if anyone has any info on the search for a new vicar,we will miss Paul Barnes he was a good vicar.
The boys are busy playing with the school teddy bear 'Frazer' ,they have to keep a log of his activities over the weekend.
Barn buddies went well ,had a good chat to various members of the church community,Jane was there had a sore lip from a skin graft after a carsenoma removal, she was still happy with the stick i gave her ,Tim sayes paul maywell not be leaving the priesthood alltogether, which is good,Tim heaton will be doing some stand in,he was great as a curate hope he will be a good priest .
The deer was a waste,a few days old ide guess, not happy will have a strong quiet word in a certain chaps ear! still the dogs will have a good meal in the morrow.
